Making Your Money Go Further: A Student’s Guide to Discounts in Birmingham

Moving to Birmingham as an international student has been an exciting experience, but it quickly taught me how fast everyday spending adds up in the UK. Balancing accommodation, groceries and socialising can feel overwhelming. Here are my top Birmingham-specific tips and habits to help your money go further!

Maximise Student Discount Platforms

UNiDAYS and Student Beans: Register for both free platforms using your university email. They offer varying deals across fashion, food, tech, and travel. Always check both apps before making a purchase online or in the city centre. While student discounts can offer great savings, it is always worth comparing them with existing sales, promotions and other offers to make sure you are getting the best deal.

Everyday Essentials: Look out for student promotions, reduced supermarket items (often discounted after 7pm), and store loyalty schemes like Tesco Clubcard or Sainsbury’s Nectar.

Look for savings before eating out

Ask at local spots: Independent cafes and local staples around Selly Oak, Harborne, and the city centre often offer student discounts, meal combos, or loyalty cards that might not be advertised online.

Plan meals ahead: Cooking a few meals at home each week and bringing lunch to campus makes the occasional meal out much more manageable. You don't have to cut out social dining altogether; you can always host group cooking gatherings and eat in your student accommodation with friends! Plus, whether you're hanging out in the communal hub spaces at Pritchatts Park or gathering in shared kitchens across The Vale, sharing food and cooking together is a great way to socialise while splitting cost.

Navigating Birmingham Transport

Buses and Trains: If you commute across Birmingham regularly, explore student/term-time bus passes or invest in a 16-25 Railcard to save on train fares. National Express West Midlands offer discounted student bus passes that are worth checking out.

Walk where possible: Birmingham is a very walkable city; walking between campus, Selly Oak, and nearby areas saves money and keeps you active. Always carry your student ID to validate any concession tickets.

Low-Cost Entertainment

Guild and Campus Events: You don't need to spend heavily to enjoy student life. The Guild of Students, university societies, and campus groups host free or low-cost activities year-round.

Local Student Pricing: Check for student rates before booking local cinemas, venues, or attractions across the city.

My Biggest Tip As An International Student

Adapting to spending in pounds takes time. Set a realistic weekly budget and treat student discounts as a tool to support that budget. Being deliberate with your spending lets you enjoy everything Birmingham has to offer without unnecessary financial stress!

So, before you pay full price, take a moment to check. That small habit can make a surprisingly big difference over the academic year! Wishing you all the best!
