Olivia Sommer

Disabled Students' Officer

Pronouns: She/her

Hi everyone, I’m Olivia! I’m a final year law student from Canada. I graduated with a BA in sociology and criminology before coming to UoB and I’m part of the Holdsworth Club, Canadian Society, and Birmingham Pro Bono Group. I’ve volunteered with children with behavioural challenges and I used to teach English to immigrants. In my free time I love to cook, travel, exercise, and host dinner parties with friends. During my time as DSO, I plan to use the advocacy skills that I’ve gained as a law student to campaign for the needs of students with disabilities at UoB.

What would you like to achieve in your role as an Officer this year?

The overarching theme of my goals as DSO is to make it easier for students with disabilities to participate freely in student life both in and out of the classroom without constantly needing to anticipate their accommodations. I aim to:

- Install automated open buttons on all high-traffic doors on campus
- Increase awareness about accessing RAP resources
- Hold drop-in accessibility brainstorming and feedback sessions
- Make quiet study spaces more approachable for neurodivergent students
