Barbershop Singing

Hiya! We're Barbershop Singing Society, and we deliver fun casual singing rehearsals each week on Sunday from 6-8pm. If you love singing and would like to try out some jazzier harmonies, practicing your ability to fit into a chorus of others, then we are the society for you.

If you're looking for some more technical serious singing, we will this year be holding auditions for a more advanced chorus of members. So if you're interested in working with likeminded individuals and potentially have the opportunity for higher stakes performance and competition then get excited! 

Barbershop is a style of acapella, with some of it's key characteristics being it's 4 part harmony, closely layered vocal lines and just intonation. This allows for gorgeous overtones to ring out as if there were a 5th voice above. Barbershop gets it's name from men in barbershops singing together in the typical TTBB (tenor 1, tenor 2/lead, baritone, bass) format, however at BSS we predominantly do mixed barbershop of SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) or ATTB. We also have something called a 'tag' found at the end of a song, which is a huge harmonic flourish of rapidly changing chords sung homorhythmically. We'll be spending a lot of time working on this part of each song.
