About us
Whether you’ve been debating for years or trying it for the first time, the University of Birmingham Debating Society is for you. Everyone’s welcome!
Each week we run practical workshops in competitive and public debating—led by our committee and guest coaches we’ve somehow persuaded (biscuits may have been involved). We also host regular low-pressure practice debates and socials, where big ideas meet a relaxed atmosphere.
Want to travel? We send teams to tournaments across the UK and help you find teammates, prep smart, and level up fast.
New this year: society awards celebrating newcomers, most-improved speakers, standout judges, and community champions. We’ll host award sessions at the end of each term—so the more you get involved, the more chances to win.
Drop in any week: watch first, try a quick 90-second speech, or dive straight into a round. Say hello and we’ll buddy you up. For more info, follow @uobdebating or just come along!
