University is often described as one of the best times of our lives. We make new friends, discover new interests and learn to become more independent. But behind the exciting experiences, there is another side of student life that we don’t always talk about: money. It can be such a sensitive topic.

Between rent, groceries, transport and study materials, managing finances can feel overwhelming. Some students may find themselves cutting back on social activities, while others may worry about affording essential items. Yet financial difficulties are not always visible. Someone may appear to be enjoying university while privately worrying about their finances.

During Talk Money Week, it is important to remember that struggling financially is nothing to be ashamed of.

Why is talking about money so difficult?

Money can be a sensitive subject to many of us. We may worry about being judged or feel as though we should have everything figured out by now. Social media can add to this pressure when it seems as though everyone else can afford holidays, meals out and an active university social life.

For international students, there may be additional pressures associated with living away from home and adjusting to the cost of living in the UK.

Everyone has different financial circumstances, and not everyone starts from the same place. Struggling with money doesn’t mean you have failed at budgeting or managing your responsibilities. Sometimes, the cost of everyday essentials is simply difficult to manage.

You don’t have to figure everything out alone.

If money becomes overwhelming, speaking to someone can be a helpful first step. You don’t need to wait until you reach a crisis point before asking for help.

There are several places you can turn to for support:

  • Guild Advice: Offers free, impartial and confidential advice to University of Birmingham students. If you are worried about your finances or unsure what support is available, the team can help you explore your options.
  • Birmingham Mind Talking Space: Provides an opportunity to talk about what is on your mind. Financial stress can affect your wellbeing, concentration and confidence, so having someone to speak to can help when things feel overwhelming.
  • The Guild’s Cost of Living initiatives: The Community Breakfast offers students free breakfast items and a drink during term time. You can also explore the Community Eco Shop as a resource for purchasing everyday essentials at an affordable price of £5.

You can also explore the University’s Student Hub services for guidance on budgeting, funding options and other assistance that may be available. Small steps are still progress!

Let's Talk About Money

Talking about money doesn’t mean sharing every detail of your financial situation. We can all help create a university culture where students feel comfortable having honest conversations about money. Checking in on a friend or sharing information about available resources can make these conversations feel less intimidating. Don’t ever forget that support is available!

Reaching out is not a sign of weakness; it is a step towards finding a way forward.

Remember that you are more than your financial circumstances, and you are never alone.
