Safety and security in Selly is a key priority, keep reading to see what how we have been working with local MPs to drive positive change based on your feedback.

What’s Happened So Far

Over the past few months, we have been working with Al Carns, MP for Selly Oak, to tackle ongoing issues many students face - including personal safety concerns, poor road conditions, unreliable waste collection, and the challenges of living in a densely populated student area.

In April, we hosted a roundtable with ten students and Al to raise these concerns directly. Since then, there has been real progress:

  • New speed cameras secured across Selly Oak and the West Midlands, along with increased traffic enforcement.

  • Pressure on the Council to respond to overcrowding and improve waste collection - especially on Dale, George, Grange, and North Roads.

  • We’ve started mapping safety hotspots using student feedback to identify priority areas.

What's Next And How You Can Help

We know many of these issues are still ongoing - and we’re committed to keeping up the momentum and making sure student concerns stay firmly on the radar of local decision-makers.

We're working on next steps, including bringing West Midlands Police and the University’s Community Safety Team into future roundtable discussions, so more voices are part of the conversation and more action can be taken.

Got something on your mind? Whether it's a concern, a priority, or an idea for change - we want to hear it. Send in your ideas via our democratic system and help shape what happens next in Selly Oak.
