Are you a woman in sport? Would you like to share your experiences of sport at the University? We’re running a Focus Group that we’d love for you to join. The Women in Sport Focus Group will be taking place on Wednesday 7 May from 1-2:30pm in the Amos Room, first floor of the Guild building. Make sure you sign up by grabbing a free ticket.

What is the aim of the Focus Group?

The Focus Group aims to understand and break down barriers that stop women wanting to get involved in sport. Hearing from a diverse range of women students about their experiences, can help us identify how the Guild can support in increasing and maintaining women’s participation in sport, as well as making sure everyone feels included and supported.

As part of the group, we’ll discuss the use of mixed gender practice spaces as a potential barrier and gather opinions on ‘women only hours’ at UoB gyms. There will also be a chance to share your thoughts on how we can improve inclusion for women with our initiatives.

What does the research say?

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) reported that over the last 10 years “there has been an average increase of 30% in women’s teams across 16 sports.”

Despite this increase in demand in university sports, there are still lots of barriers preventing women students getting involved.

Women in Sport reported that 1.3million girls who once loved sport are now disengaging. This Girl Can reported many women faced barriers to sport such as affordability, time, lack of energy and feeling embarrassed or inadequate. We want to understand if UoB students are facing these barriers and help to break them down.

Your Sports Officer, Lara Parker, who is continuing to work with UB Sport to make sure female voices are heard and amplified, commented: “As the Sports Officer at UoB and a female student, I know how important it is to make sport at UoB feel accessible and enjoyable for everyone. I’ve seen how easy it is for women to get put off by barriers like lack of confidence or not knowing where to start, and I really want to change that.”

If you would like to share your experiences in the focus group, don’t forget to sign up!
